The Fareham Society
40th Anniversary
Design Awards 2016
After inspections, the following were awarded:
DESIGN AWARD – NEW BUILD NON-RESIDENTIAL
CEMAST, Lee-on-the Solent
Client Fareham College. Architect Perkins Ogden Architects. Builder J B Leadbitter & Co Ltd.
The judges were unanimous in their decision to give the Award to CEMAST a large purpose-built college campus. A landmark building with extensive glazed front under a flat roof has created an excellent working environment with a multi-functional double height concourse running the length of the building. This links the separate departments and provides a spacious meeting area for students and staff. The building has rainwater harvesting which helps sustainability.

HIGHLY COMMENDED – NEW BUILD NON-RESIDENTIAL
The Innovation Centre, Lee-on-the-Solent
Client Fareham Borough Council. Architect Perkins Ogden Architects. Builder J B Leadbitter & Co Ltd.
The Centre has clean lines, both externally and internally with an excellent layout of the accommodation and facilities for its offices and specialist workshops. These vary in size and have easy access for equipment and goods and internal access to the ancillary facilities shared with the office accommodation. The efficiency of the building is enhanced by a building management system (BMS) which controls access to the building and the internal environment with remote monitoring.

HIGHLY COMMENDED – NEW BUILD RESIDENTIAL
Onehunga Cottage, 192 Castle Street
Clients Mr and Mrs Clifford. Architect Town and Country Architecture. Builder PH Construction (Wickham) Ltd.
Onehunga Cottage was felt to be worthy of its commendation. On a sensitive site in a conservation area adjoining Portchester Castle, a Scheduled Ancient Monument, the new building responds well to both its immediate and wider environment. Good quality materials; handmade bricks, clay roof tiles and timber windows have been used.

DESIGN AWARD – RESTORATION
Holy Trinity Church, West Street
Client Fareham Deanery, Diocese of Portsmouth. Architect Jane Jones – Warner Associates. Builder T Coleborn & Son Ltd.
Following structural defects, the reconstruction of the top of the tower has been well-executed. The removal of the base of the former spire and making good of the tower has been carried out with quality materials and workmanship. This has also improved longer views of the tower in its urban context.
Inside the church, innovative design and completion of fittings in the rear of the nave provide a novel answer to the need for additional facilities.

HIGHLY COMMENDED – RESTORATION
Chapel Steeple at Fareham Cemetery, Wickham Road
Client Fareham Borough Council. Architect Planned Maintenance Surveyor, Fareham Borough Council. Builder Topmarx Ltd.
The timber steeple to the chapel had suffered much decay and woodpecker damage over the years. Excellent craftsmanship and care in the repair and partial reconstruction has saved this Fareham landmark. Dragons tail and lead cap to the top and louvered vents have been faithfully reconstructed to the original design.

DESIGN AWARD – LANDSCAPING
CEMAST, Lee-on-the Solent
Client Fareham College.
The well-detailed hard surfaces in front of the main entrance and between the rear wings of CEMAST are complemented by beach style landscaping. This planting, in shingle between weathered timbers, is reminiscent of the groins on the Solent beach, and enhances the sharpness of the building.
